- 2.5L four-cylinder (petrol): The most common engine in North American and some other markets was the 2.5-liter QR25DE, which put out around 165 horsepower. In a 2021 Reddit post, users noted it was generally reliable.
-
2.0L four-cylinder (petrol): A less powerful 2.0-liter engine was also available, particularly in Asian markets.
- 2.2L four-cylinder (diesel): Many markets outside of North America had a 2.2-liter turbocharged diesel engine option.
- All-Mode 4×4: This system allowed the driver to electronically switch between 2WD, Auto 4WD, and 4WD Lock.
- 2WD: For normal on-road driving.
- Auto: Sent power to the rear wheels when the front wheels slipped.
- Lock: A fixed 4×4 mode for more challenging off-road conditions, which would disengage automatically at higher speeds to prevent damage.
- Interior: The X-Trail’s interior is praised for its practicality, including seats that fold completely flat, wipeable rear flooring, and numerous storage cubbies, including unique air-conditioned cupholders.
- Dash layout: The dashboard featured a centrally mounted instrument cluster, which was sometimes an adjustment for drivers.
- Convenience: Depending on the trim, features could include heated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, cruise control, and climate control.
- Towing capacity: According to CarsGuide, the 2005 model had a maximum towing capacity of up to 2000kg.
- Engine: The diesel engines, specifically the 2.2L, were known to have potential issues with the turbocharger system. Signs of a failing turbo include black smoke, excessive oil consumption, or a whistling sound.
- Transmission: Some owners have reported issues with the four-speed automatic transmission, such as slipping or delayed shifts. Regular fluid changes are recommended maintenance.
- Exterior: The paint can be prone to chipping and developing an “orange peel” texture.
- Rust: For vehicles in winter climates, rust is a common concern.
- Suspension and steering: On higher-mileage vehicles, worn suspension components like ball joints and struts are common. Issues with the power steering system, from leaks to complete failure, have also been reported.
- Used parts: Used OEM and aftermarket parts are widely available on sites like eBay.
