- Mariner/Mercury 2.2hp, 2.5hp, and 3.3hp: On some models, the 2.5hp was a slightly de-tuned version of the 3.3hp, but the mechanicals are otherwise very similar. For example, the throttle slide on some 2.2hp models was restricted, and cutting it down could increase performance.
- Fuel mix: The recommended fuel mix for these two-stroke portables is typically 50:1.
- Common issues
: Given their age, these engines are prone to issues with the fuel system due to ethanol and debris. Clogged carburetors and fuel-related problems are common, especially after a long period of storage.
- Mercury/Mariner 9.9hp and 15hp: Many Mercury and Mariner 9.9hp and 15hp models were based on the same engine block. The difference in horsepower was achieved with different carburetors and exhaust plates.
- Starting: These engines featured a Capacitor Discharge (CD) ignition for quick and reliable starting.
- Engine configuration
: Some 6hp models, for example, were two-cylinder engines with a displacement of 169cc, a 2.08:1 gear ratio, and a tiller steering. An optional 4-amp alternator was available.
- Carburetors: The carburetors for Mercury/Mariner 9.9hp and 15hp 2-stroke models are widely available on online marketplaces like eBay
.
- Common components: Parts like carburetors, stators, and starters are still available from marine parts suppliers.
- OEM vs. aftermarket: When searching for parts, you can use the original Mercury or Mariner part numbers. Because of the brand consolidation, parts from the same era are often interchangeable.
