- Engine: The 850 XP EPS is powered by an 850cc liquid-cooled, four-stroke, twin-cylinder engine with four valves per cylinder and electronic fuel injection (EFI), producing 70 horsepower.
- Chassis and suspension: The new frame featured a narrower mid-section, improving rider comfort. The dual A-arm suspension was revised, with 9 inches of wheel travel in the front and 10.25 inches in the rear.
- Power steering: The EPS system provided variable assistance, reducing steering effort at low speeds and offering more feedback at higher speeds.
- Storage and towing: The ATV featured a Lock and Ride system on the redesigned cargo racks. It has a front rack capacity of 120 pounds and a rear rack capacity of 240 pounds, with a towing rating of 1,500 pounds.
- Additional features: The vehicle came with three headlights, four-wheel disc brakes, and a digital gauge cluster.
- Stalling and irregular idle: Some owners of the 850 XP have reported the machine stalling or bucking when shifting out of neutral. Possible causes include issues with the fuel filter, injectors, throttle position sensor (TPS), or idle air control valve (IAC).
- Frame issues: Some owners have reported frame problems, though the severity depends on the machine’s use and maintenance.
- Airbox issues: An airbox leak can cause engine damage. Some owners also report engine oil in the airbox, which a dealer may attribute to normal machine function.
- Recalls: The 2009 model was subject to two safety recalls issued by Polaris:
- Crankcase breather valve (July 2009): This recall involved a crankcase breather valve that could fail in sub-freezing temperatures, causing crankcase pressure to increase. The pressure could lead to an oil leak that could cause a fire.
- Steering knuckle (December 2009): A defective suspension system could cause a loss of steering control if the front suspension ball joint stem separated from the steering knuckle.

Due to the popularity of the Sportsman platform, many parts and aftermarket accessories are still available for the 2009 model.
