The first-generation Kia Sedona (KV-II) built from 2002 to 2005 is a seven-seat minivan. It marked Kia’s very first minivan entry into the North American market. It gained popularity by offering V6 power and dual sliding doors at a much lower price point than competitors like the Dodge Caravan or Honda Odyssey.

Key Mechanical Design: The Engine & Heavy Weight

All models across this four-year span share the same heavy-duty powertrain architecture:

The Engine: A 3.5-liter Sigma V6 engine producing 195 horsepower and 218 lb-ft of torque.
The Critical Component: This engine uses a rubber timing belt rather than a metal chain. It requires strict replacement every 60,000 miles. If this belt snaps while the engine is running, the internal valves will smash into the pistons, destroying the engine completely.
Chassis Weight: The first-generation Sedona was heavily built. It weighed over 4,700 pounds, making it significantly heavier than its rivals. This extra weight resulted in poor fuel economy, averaging around 14 City / 20 Highway MPG.

Year-by-Year Transmissions & Updates

While the body style remained the same, Kia upgraded the transmission midway through this production run to improve highway drivability:

2002–2003 Models: Equipped with a standard 5-speed automatic transmission.
2004–2005 Models: Upgraded to a smoother 5-speed automatic with Sportmatic, which allowed drivers to manually shift gears by tapping the shift lever up or down. These models also received a lightly refreshed front grille and updated taillights.

Trim Levels & Interior Features

The Sedona was kept simple with just two available trim configurations, both utilizing a front-wheel-drive (FWD) layout:

LX (Base): Features standard dual manual sliding side doors, front and rear air conditioning, power windows, power locks, and 15-inch steel wheels with hubcaps.
EX (Luxury): Adds 15-inch alloy wheels, front fog lights, power rear quarter vents, remote keyless entry, cruise control, a roof rack, and faux woodgrain interior trim. Higher options included leather seating and a tilt/slide sunroof.

Seating Layout & Cargo Flexibility

7-Passenger Configuration: Features two front bucket seats, two removable second-row captain’s chairs, and a removable third-row three-passenger bench seat.
No Stow ‘n Go: Unlike newer minivans, the second and third-row seats do not fold flat into the floor. To maximize cargo space, you must physically unlock the seats and lift them completely out of the van. The heavy third-row bench requires two people to safely lift out.

Alternator Failures Due to Power Steering Leaks: The power steering fluid reservoir and hoses sit directly above the alternator. Over time, these hoses develop leaks, dripping fluid straight into the alternator and causing total electrical charging failure.
Stuck or Broken Interior Door Handles: The plastic interior and exterior sliding door handles are fragile. They frequently snap off or get stuck in the open position, preventing the sliding doors from latching shut safely.
Rusted Rear Air Conditioning Lines: The metal lines running refrigerant to the rear climate control box run underneath the passenger side of the vehicle. They are highly prone to road salt corrosion and leaking, causing the A/C system to blow warm air.
Crankshaft Pulley Bolt Failure: Similar to the Sorento of this era, the main harmonic balancer bolt on the engine crankshaft can snap or back out, damaging the engine accessories and timing gear.
