The first-generation Kia Sorento (BL) built from 2003 to 2006 is a five-seat midsize SUV. Like the 2007–2009 models, these early versions are rugged, truck-based vehicles featuring a heavy-duty body-on-frame design, a solid rear axle, and a mechanical four-wheel-drive (4WD) system with a low-range transfer case.

Key Mechanical Design: The Timing Belt Engine

Unlike later versions of the first-generation Sorento, all models from 2003 to 2006 use an older engine design that requires strict preventative maintenance:

The Engine: A 3.5-liter Sigma V6 engine producing 192 horsepower and 217 lb-ft of torque.
The Critical Component: This engine uses a rubber timing belt rather than a metal chain. It must be replaced every 60,000 miles. If the belt snaps while driving, the pistons will smash into the valves, causing catastrophic, irreversible engine failure.

Year-by-Year Transmissions & Updates

While the engine stayed the same, Kia upgraded the gearboxes during this four-year run to improve highway fuel economy:

2003–2004 Models: Equipped with a 4-speed automatic transmission (or a rare 5-speed manual on early base models).
2005–2006 Models: Upgraded to a more efficient 5-speed automatic transmission with Sportmatic manual shift control.

Trim Levels & Drivetrain Layouts

The vehicle was offered in two main configurations: LX (Base) and EX (Luxury). Both variants came standard with rear-wheel drive (RWD) or optional four-wheel drive (4WD).

Part-Time 4WD (Standard on LX 4×4): Features an interior dashboard knob with 2HI / 4HI / 4LO. You must manually switch into 4WD. This system locks the front and rear axles together. It should only be used on slippery surfaces like heavy snow or mud. Driving in 4HI on dry pavement will damage the drivetrain components.
Torque-On-Demand AWD (Standard on EX 4×4): Features a dashboard knob with AUTO / 4LO. The vehicle stays in rear-wheel drive under normal conditions. It automatically engages the front wheels when it detects slipping. You can safely leave this system in AUTO mode year-round on dry city streets.

Common Mechanical Failure Points (Used Car Checklist)

If you are inspecting a used 2003–2006 Sorento, look out for these specific issues:

Crankshaft Bolt Failure: Early 3.5L engines are notorious for a factory defect where the main crankshaft pulley bolt snaps. If this bolt breaks, it destroys the engine accessories and ruins the timing belt drive system.
Coolant Expansion Tank Cracks: The plastic coolant reservoir tank is highly prone to cracking under high pressure. This leads to hidden fluid leaks, engine overheating, and blown head gaskets.
Stuck 4WD Actuators: The electronic shift motor located underneath the truck on the transfer case frequently seizes if the previous owner rarely used 4WD. Test the dashboard switch to make sure the 4LO dash light illuminates and clicks into gear.
