This era represents a significant shift for the Accord, as it grew substantially in physical size—briefly cross-classifying as a “Large Car” by EPA standards—and introduced a bolder, more angular exterior design language available in both Sedan and Coupe body styles.

Core Engine Options

During this three-year block, Honda offered three distinct engine configurations paired with different transmission layouts:

2.4L Inline-4 (K24Z2): Standard on LX and LX-P trims. It produces 177 horsepower and 161 lb-ft of torque.
2.4L Inline-4 High-Output (K24Z3): Standard on EX and EX-L trims. It bumps output to 190 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque via an upgraded exhaust system and ECU tuning.
3.5L V6 (J35Z2 / J35Z3): Available on premium trims, delivering 271 horsepower and up to 254 lb-ft of torque.

2008 Model Year

The Redesign: Launched with a longer wheelbase, wider track, and a unique multi-button dashboard layout.

Critical Mechanical Weaknesses

While the eighth-generation Accord is capable of exceptionally high mileage, the 2008–2010 models suffer from specific, well-documented engineering flaws that used buyers must look for:

1. V6 Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) Oil Burning

Similar to contemporary Honda Pilots, V6 automatic models utilize VCM to shut down 2 or 3 cylinders during highway cruising.

The Flaw: Prolonged cylinder deactivation creates internal pressure drops that draw oil past the piston rings. This causes rapid oil consumption, spark plug fouling, engine misfires, and rough running.
The Symptoms: The “ECO” light illuminating on the dash followed by a distinct vibration, or a low oil dipstick reading between service intervals.

2. Premature Rear Brake Pad Wear

The Flaw: 2008 to 2010 models feature an aggressively biased electronic brake distribution system designed to minimize vehicle nose-dive during light stopping.
The Result: The rear brake pads frequently wear down to the wear indicators in as little as 15,000 to 20,000 miles, far sooner than the front pads. Honda revised the pad compound and added a spring kit in later production runs to combat this.

3. Power Steering Rack Leakage

The high-pressure power steering hoses and the input shaft seals on the steering rack are prone to cold-weather weeping. If fluid levels drop, air enters the system, causing a loud whirring or groaning noise whenever the steering wheel is turned.

4. VTC Actuator Rattle (4-Cylinder Engines)

On the 2.4L four-cylinder engines, the Variable Timing Control (VTC) actuator can fail to pin itself correctly upon shutdown. This manifests as a loud, brief metallic rattling or grinding noise lasting 1–2 seconds immediately upon a cold startup.
