It underwent a significant mid-cycle refresh for the 2006 model year to address early transmission vulnerabilities and styling complaints.

Engine: 3.0L 24-valve SOHC VTEC V6 (J30A4 / J30A5).
2003–2005 Output: 240 horsepower and 212 lb-ft of torque.
2006–2007 Output: 244 horsepower and 211 lb-ft of torque (Updated airflow plumbing and revised SAE testing standards altered the paper numbers).
Transmission choices: Standard 5-speed automatic or a rare, highly sought-after close-ratio 6-speed manual (initially coupe-only, expanded to sedan for 2006).

The Mid-Cycle Shift: 2003–2005 vs. 2006–2007

Phase 1: 2003, 2004, and 2005 Model Years

Design Profile: Identified by clean lines and unique, triangular rear taillight clusters on the sedan that did not extend into the trunk lid.
The 2005 Accord Hybrid V6: Honda launched a unique Accord Hybrid featuring a modified 3.0L V6. It integrated an electric motor and early Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) to boost output to 255 hp while hitting 37 mpg highway. It was fast but expensive and discontinued by 2007.

1. Catastrophic 5-Speed Automatic Transmission Failures (2003–2004)

The Issue: Early V6 automatic models are notoriously prone to premature transmission failure. Insufficient oil flow to the second-gear clutch pack causes extreme heat buildup, shedding friction material into the fluid and clogging internal passages. This leads to harsh slipping, gear gear flare, or sudden lockups.
The Fix: Honda issued a major safety recall to install an oil jet kit that sprayed fluid directly onto the gears. 2005 to 2007 models received redesigned internal oil paths and are significantly more reliable.

2. Interference Engine & Timing Belt Replacement

Unlike the 4-cylinder model of this era which uses a timing chain, the 3.0L V6 utilizes a rubber timing belt. Because it is a strict interference design, a broken belt will instantly slam the pistons into the valves, vaporizing the engine. Ensure the timing belt and water pump assembly have been swapped out every 105,000 miles or 7 years.

3. Power Steering Pump & O-Ring Air Leak

A widespread flaw across this generation is a tiny, failing 50-cent rubber O-ring on the power steering inlet hose. When cold, the hardened ring shrinks and allows air to suck into the pump. This causes the fluid to foam, resulting in a loud, high-pitched whirring or groaning noise whenever you turn the steering wheel.

4. Compliance Bushing Tears

The front lower suspension control arms feature heavy fluid-filled compliance bushings that dry rot, tear, and leak their internal oil. If you notice a distinct clunking or pop when tapping the brakes at low speeds, or if the car wanders on the highway, the front control arm bushings are shot.
