This specific era is highly coveted because Honda added standard safety equipment, upgraded the powertrain mechanics, and introduced the street-tuned SC trim, moving away from the unpainted plastic body panels that defined the 2003–2006 models.

Core Powertrain Upgrades (2007+)

In 2007, the Element received a major mechanical overhaul that remained constant until it was discontinued in 2011:

Engine: 2.4L i-VTEC Inline-4 (K24A8).
Transmission: Upgraded from a 4-speed to a 5-speed automatic (a rare 5-speed manual remained available through 2009).
Output: Power increased slightly to 166 horsepower and 161 lb-ft of torque.
Drivetrain Choices: Available in standard Front-Wheel Drive (FWD) or optional Real-Time All-Wheel Drive (AWD).

2007 Model Year (The Mechanical Pivot)

Safety Integration: Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) with traction control, brake assist, and side-curtain airbags became standard across all models.
Seat-Mounted Belts: The front seat belts were integrated directly into the seatbacks rather than the rear “clamshell” suicide doors. This allowed rear passengers to exit without the front occupants unbuckling.

2. VTEC Solenoid Leaks and Gasket Failures

The VTEC solenoid assembly at the back passenger side of the cylinder head frequently develops oil leaks. When the internal mesh screen gets clogged with old engine oil sludge, it triggers an instant “Limp Mode” accompanied by Check Engine light codes P2646 or P2647.

3. Catalytic Converter Theft Vulnerability

Because of the high ground clearance and easy access underneath, the Element is one of the highest-targeted vehicles for catalytic converter theft. Check if a used model has an aftermarket shield installed or if the exhaust system has been welded back together awkwardly.

4. Worn Suspension Bushings & Compliance Links

The Element is heavy and aerodynamic like a toaster, causing severe crosswind buffering. This forces the front lower control arm compliance bushings and rear sway bar links to wear out every 60,000 to 80,000 miles, resulting in a hollow clunking noise over small bumps.
