- 3.0L “Vulcan” V6: The standard engine, producing 155 horsepower and 185 lb-ft of torque. It was also offered with a flexible fuel (E85) option.
- 3.0L “Duratec” V6: An optional engine, available on higher trims (SES and SEL). It produced 200 horsepower and 200 lb-ft of torque.
- SE: The base trim, featuring standard equipment such as a 3.0L Vulcan V6 engine and a 4-speed automatic transmission.
- SES: A sportier trim (available until 2004) that featured a slightly firmer suspension, different wheels, and the more powerful 3.0L Duratec V6 as an option.
- SEL: The top-tier trim, offering premium features such as wood grain interior trim and optional leather upholstery.
- Station Wagon: A station wagon body style was also available during these years, providing increased cargo space.
- 2000: Fourth generation introduced with a less controversial exterior and interior styling than its predecessor. A sedan and station wagon body style were offered.
- 2001: A recall was issued for a faulty wiper motor switch that could cause the wipers to stop working.
- 2002: A mid-cycle refresh was introduced, adding a slightly restyled front grille and rear taillights.
- 2003: The SES Deluxe trim was offered with standard features such as a 6-disc CD changer and 16-inch alloy wheels.
- 2004: The lineup was simplified, dropping the SES trim and shuffling features.
- 2005: This was the final year of public sales for the fourth-generation Taurus.
- 2006–2007: The Taurus nameplate was used exclusively for fleet sales during these years.
- Transmission failure: The 4-speed automatic transmission is notoriously unreliable, often failing at or before 100,000 miles.
- Engine oil pan gasket leak: A leaky oil pan gasket is a common issue that can cause an oil leak.
- Engine misfire: Owners have reported engine misfires or bucking, especially at freeway speeds.
- Electrical issues: Common electrical problems include malfunctioning automatic headlights and climate control failures.
- Rust issues: In northern climates, these vehicles are known to rust, particularly in the rocker panels and rear wheel wells.
