The 2020 model year represents a unique crossroads for Buick’s entry-level lineup, as the brand sold two entirely different vehicles simultaneously with nearly identical names: the older standard Buick Encore and the brand-new, premium Buick Encore GX. While they share an acronym, they ride on entirely distinct platforms, offer separate engine families, and feature completely different interior packaging.

🚗 The Standard 2020 Buick Encore (The Legacy Model)

The standard Encore entered 2020 as a continuation of Buick’s older first-generation subcompact vehicle. It is valued for its ultra-compact dimensions, making it exceptionally easy to park, though its cabin layout feels a generation older.

Powertrain: Powered exclusively by a 1.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine making 138 horsepower and 148 lb-ft of torque. It uses a traditional, heavy-duty 6-speed automatic transmission.
Cabin Functionality: To fold the rear seats flat, occupants must physically flip the bottom seat cushions forward before unlatching the backrests. It holds a smaller 18.8 cubic feet of trunk space.
Trim Levels: Simplified heavily for 2020 down to basic 1SV and Preferred trims to avoid overlapping with the newer GX.

🚙 The 2020 Buick Encore GX (The Modern Evolution)

The Encore GX was launched as an all-new global model built to bridge the gap between mainstream hatchbacks and premium compact SUVs. It is roughly 4 inches longer and 1.3 inches wider than the base Encore, curing the original model’s cramped rear-seat limitations.

- 1.2L Turbo 3-Cylinder: Generates 137 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque (Standard on Front-Wheel Drive models).
- 1.3L Turbo 3-Cylinder: Generates 155 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque. This engine is standard on All-Wheel Drive (AWD) models and paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission instead of the FWD CVT.
Superior Cargo & Storage: Trunk capacity jumps to 23.5 cubic feet. To accommodate long hardware store items, the front passenger seat folds completely flat forward, a feature missing on the standard model.
