- Pure EV (BEV): Powered by a 170 hp / 184 lb-ft torque electric motor driving the rear wheels. It delivers an EPA-estimated all-electric range of 72 to 81 miles. []
- Range Extender (REx): Pairs the same electric motor with a tiny 0.6-liter 2-cylinder gasoline generator borrowed from a BMW scooter. The gas engine never drives the wheels directly; it purely charges the battery when it drops below a 6.5% charge.
- Total Range: Yields roughly 72 miles of pure electric range, plus an additional 70 miles on gasoline.
- Note: In 2016 North American models, the 2.4-gallon gas tank was electronically limited by software to roughly 1.9 gallons to meet California emissions laws. Many owners use third-party OBDII coding tools to “code” the car, unlocking the full fuel tank capacity and enabling the “Hold Battery Charge” menu feature.
- Level 1 (Standard 120V Outlet): Takes roughly 13 to 16 hours to charge from empty.
- Level 2 (240V Home Charger): Fully recharges the vehicle in approximately 3.5 to 4 hours.
- DC Fast Charging: If equipped with the optional SAE Combo fast-charging port, it can juice the small battery to 80% in about 30 to 40 minutes.
- Suicide Doors: The car utilizes rear-hinged “coach” doors. The front doors must be opened first before the rear passengers can open theirs, which can occasionally be awkward in tight parking spaces.
- Eco-Friendly Cabin: The interior features highly sustainable materials, including dashboard elements made from open-pore eucalyptus wood and door panels manufactured from visible plant-fiber hemp.
- One-Pedal Driving: The i3 features a highly aggressive regenerative braking system. Lifting your foot entirely off the accelerator pedal immediately slows the vehicle down to a complete stop, saving your physical brake pads from routine wear.
- Air Conditioner “Black Death” (Catastrophic Failure): The electric A/C compressor is tasked with cooling both the passenger cabin and the high-voltage battery pack. If the compressor fails internally, it can shower metallic shards through the entire cooling lines. Fixing this requires a near-total replacement of the battery cooling lines and climate assemblies, costing thousands at a dealership if out of warranty.
- 12V Auxiliary Battery Failures: The car relies on a small motorcycle-sized 12-volt battery to boot up the computers and close the main high-voltage contactors. These batteries typically last 3 to 4 years. When they die, they cause a cascade of strange, unrelated dashboard error codes, often throwing the car into an immediate ” drivetrain error” loop. Proactively replacing this battery every few years is highly advised.
- Rapid Tire Wear: The i3 uses extraordinarily tall, ultra-skinny tires designed exclusively by Bridgestone (Ecopia series) to lower aerodynamic drag. Because of the instant electric torque routed to the rear wheels, rear tires wear out quickly, often lasting only 15,000 to 20,000 miles. Because the front and rear tires are different sizes, they cannot be rotated to even out wear.
- Fuel Vent Line Recall (NHTSA 17V088): Affecting 2014–2017 REx models, the fuel tank ventilation line can rub against a high-voltage cable sleeve, potentially causing a fuel vapor leak. Ensure a dealer has inspected and clipped this line safely.
