- 1990-1996 Models: These primarily used various serial number ranges for identification, and general model year guides are available from parts suppliers like Southcentral Outboards or Crowley Marine.
- 1997-2000 Models: For models made from 1997 onwards, the serial number sticker itself usually contains the model year information directly, and Mercury generally uses the serial number for parts lookup rather than a generic model year.
- Four-Stroke Introduction: In 1995, both Mercury and Mariner introduced their initial four-stroke outboards in 9.9 HP and 50 HP configurations, noted for quieter operation, better fuel efficiency, and reduced emissions. The range expanded fully in 1996.
- Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI): Many high-horsepower V6 two-stroke models transitioned from carburetors to EFI (e.g., the 175 HP EFI in 1997), offering smoother operation and better throttle response.
- OptiMax Direct Injection (DFI): In 1996, Mercury introduced the first Direct Fuel Injected two-stroke, the 200 DFI Optimax. This technology provided a major leap in fuel economy and reduced emissions while maintaining the power of a two-stroke engine.
- Sport Jet: In 1993, the brand introduced the Sport Jet 90, a jet drive engine that created a new market for specific boat types.
- Small Engines: Reliable single-cylinder two-strokes like the 3.3 HP and 4 HP were prevalent throughout the decade.
- Mid-Range: The 3-cylinder 90 HP models were considered highly popular and reliable, with good parts support.
- High Performance: The
XR6 Classic
(150 HP V6) and various 2.5L V6 models (including 200 HP and 225 HP versions) were known for their performance and durability.
