- The AQ Series (1988–1993): Models like the single-prop AQ290 and dual-prop 290DP are legendary for their ruggedness. They featured an all-mechanical design with internal shift mechanisms, no rubber exhaust bellows, and a robust mechanical reverse lock.
- The “Spence” / JV Generation (1994–1997): Volvo Penta partnered with OMC (Outboard Marine Corporation) to create the SX (Single Prop) and DP-S (Duoprop) lines. This era discarded the old AQ transom shield layout in favor of a modern, standard gimbal housing with external trim rams.
- BB: 1986–1989
- SP: 1989–1993 (Single Prop version of the late AQ series, e.g., SP-A)
- DP: 1989–1993 (Duoprop version of the late AQ series, e.g., DP-A, DP-B, DP-C)
- NC: 1993–1995 (The first Joint Venture / OMC-style red blocks)
- MD: 1994–1995
- HU: 1995–1996
- NC / BY: 1996–1997
- 1988–1993 (Volvo-Archived Blocks): Paired mostly with overhead-cam 4-cylinder engines (like the AQ131 or AQ151 based on Volvo car engines) or GM-sourced V6 and V8 blocks painted white or charcoal grey.
- 1994–1997 (The Ford and GM Era): The joint venture introduced Ford-sourced V8 blocks (like the 5.0L FI and 5.8L FFi) alongside GM blocks, all painted bright charcoal silver or dark red.
- AQ Mechanical Reverse Lock: On 1988–1993 AQ drives, the mechanical latch assembly must be properly adjusted. If it is rusted or broken, the outdrive will dangerously kick up out of the water when you shift into reverse.
- The Infamous Cone Clutch: Both AQ and SX drives use a brass cone clutch rather than dog gears. If shifting becomes stiff, delayed, or “clunks,” the cone clutch is likely glazed and requires lapping or replacement.
- Bellows Maintenance: Unlike later models, AQ series exhaust and u-joint bellows utilize distinct compression clamps. If the u-joint bellows splits, water will directly flood your boat’s transom bearing, seizing the drivetrain.
- Trim Pump Relays: JV models (1994+) are notorious for corroded external trim relays mounted near the pump. If your drive won’t trim up or down, look there first.
