- Power output: The U.S. version of the first-year model had an advertised output of 145 hp and 83 lb-ft of torque. Power output varied slightly over the years and with different market restrictions.
- V-Boost system: This unique system used butterfly valves to open a passage between the intake manifolds of opposing cylinders at around 6,000 RPM. This allowed each cylinder to be fed by two carburetors simultaneously, mimicking a supercharger and providing a huge boost in acceleration.
- Drivetrain: Power was delivered to the rear wheel through a five-speed manual gearbox and a shaft drive system.
- Suspension: The motorcycle featured a soft suspension that comprised a telescopic fork up front and dual side-mounted shocks in the rear. This setup delivered a comfortable straight-line ride but was criticized for its performance in turns. Updates in 1993 included a larger-diameter fork to reduce high-speed wobble.
- Handling: The heavy, powerful V-Max, with its short wheelbase, could feel clumsy and flex under hard power, especially in tight turns. The bike’s ergonomics, including its highish footpegs, were not ideal for cornering.
- Braking: The 1985 model came with dual front discs and a single rear disc. The braking performance and feel were widely considered poor, especially when compared to the bike’s massive power output. Four-piston calipers were added in 1993 to improve braking.
- Iconic styling: Signature design cues included the large, aggressive air scoops, beefy V4 engine, two-into-two exhaust, and a low-slung stance.
- Under-seat fuel tank: To accommodate the large engine, the fuel tank was placed under the seat, giving the iconic “tank” on top a more decorative role. This configuration resulted in a small fuel capacity and a limited range.
- Long production run: The V-Max went largely unchanged from 1985 until 2007, with most modifications being minor revisions to address safety and handling. Major changes included the beefier forks and improved brakes in 1993, and revisions to the ignition system and other components in 1990 and 1996.
- Overpowered for daily use: For many riders, the V-Max is considered overpowered for routine commuting or city riding. The V-Boost feature, in particular, was rarely engaged in city traffic.
- Heat issues: Like many powerful, large-engine bikes, the V-Max was prone to running hot in stop-and-go traffic, requiring careful monitoring of the engine temperature.
- Maintenance: The four-carburetor setup can be notoriously difficult to tune. With proper care, however, these bikes are known to be reliable.
- Market variations: Some markets, like Japan and early European versions, received bikes without the V-Boost system and with reduced power output.
