- 2007–2013 (first generation): These years established the Grizzly 700’s foundation with a 686cc single-cylinder engine and the first use of Electric Power Steering (EPS) in an ATV. The suspension and ergonomics of this generation were later refined.
- 2014–2015 (revised generation): Often considered the best years of the 2007–2015 generation, this model received a wider track and updated EPS with a dual-mode system.
- 2016–2018 (708cc engine): These models featured a 708cc engine, but some owners reported issues with burning oil. The suspension and ergonomics were again revised, and the chassis was changed.
- 2019–present (686cc engine returns): Yamaha returned to the more reliable 686cc engine platform in 2019, bringing back the forged piston and revised head introduced in 2014. The 2019+ models also featured a re-geared transmission for better acceleration and new styling.
- 2025 (EPS update): For the 2025 model year, Yamaha updated the EPS with more electric power and assistance.
- Engine: The reliable 686cc liquid-cooled, SOHC, four-stroke single-cylinder engine is a key component of the Grizzly 700’s reputation. The engine is known for its strong low-end torque.
- Ultramatic® transmission: Yamaha’s class-leading CVT is recognized as the most durable on the market. It provides natural, all-wheel engine braking for extra control and confidence.
- On-Command® 4WD: This user-controlled system offers selectable 2WD, limited-slip 4WD, and a fully locked differential 4WD for predictable and consistent power.
- Electric Power Steering (EPS): Standard on most trims, EPS reduces rider fatigue and dampens feedback from the terrain. In models from 2014 onward, it is speed-sensitive, providing more assist at lower speeds and less at higher speeds for better control.
- Suspension: The Grizzly uses a four-wheel independent suspension system, providing a plush ride. Travel is approximately 7.6 inches in the front and 9.1 inches in the rear on newer models.
- Cargo and towing: The Grizzly 700 can typically tow over 1,300 pounds and carry up to 110 lbs on the front rack and 198 lbs on the rear.
-
Base (Grizzly 700 EPS)
: The standard model comes with EPS and On-Command 4WD, and steel wheels.
-
Special Edition (SE)
: This trim often includes cosmetic upgrades like painted plastics, unique graphics, and aluminum wheels.
-
XT-R
: The highest trim level adds features for extreme terrain, such as a factory-installed Warn winch and larger, more aggressive tires.
- Overheating: Some early first-generation (2007–2013) models experienced overheating issues, often due to a malfunctioning radiator fan or coolant circulation problems.
- Engine stalling: Some owners of newer models have reported issues with the engine stalling when encountering water, potentially caused by steam entering the airbox.
- Weak power (relative): While reliable, the 686cc engine offers less raw power than some larger competitor models.
- Electronics: Electrical gremlins and starting issues can arise from weak batteries or corroded connections, particularly in older or poorly maintained ATVs.
