- Engine: Early models used a 599cc turbocharged inline-3 petrol engine, while a facelift in 2002 increased displacement to 698cc. A 799cc diesel option was also available. The petrol engine has a reputation for issues, including turbo failure and piston ring failure, especially if not serviced regularly.
- Transmission: The 450 used a 6-speed automated manual transmission (AMT). This early version was notoriously jerky and unrefined, contributing to a less-than-smooth driving experience.
- Safety: The car was built around a strong steel safety cage known as the “Tridion cell,” which provided a high level of protection for its size.
- Common issues: Besides the potential engine problems, issues with the semi-automatic gearbox and electrical faults were common.
- Engine: For the North American market, the 451 was powered by a 1.0L, naturally-aspirated inline-3 Mitsubishi engine. While not powerful (70 horsepower), it was known for being far more robust and reliable than the previous generation’s engine.
- Transmission: The automated manual transmission was updated, but it remained the most common complaint among owners, with reports of jerky shifting.
- Dimensions: The 451 was slightly longer and wider than the 450, offering a bit more interior space and luggage capacity.
- Common issues: Despite the engine improvements, owners still reported problems, including electrical failures, clutch and actuator wear, air conditioning issues, and worn-out suspension components.
- Used vehicle marketplaces: Websites like Autotrader and local classifieds are the most reliable places to find used Smart Fortwo models.
- Specialty parts retailers: Given the high potential for issues, especially in older models, many online retailers offer a wide variety of OEM and aftermarket replacement parts for both the Smart Fortwo 450 and Smart Fortwo 451. You can also find technical service bulletins (TSBs) and service information online.
