- Engine oil consumption: Both the SOHC and DOHC versions of the 1.9L engine are known to consume oil, often at a rate of up to one quart per 1,000 miles. This is not always a sign of a fault, but it requires owners to check and top off their oil regularly.
- Intake manifold gasket failure: A faulty intake manifold gasket was a known issue on some models and could cause coolant and oil leaks.
- Alternator failure: Stalling or the charge light illuminating is often the result of a failed alternator.
- Loose gas cap: A loose or worn gas cap can trigger the “Check Engine” light, and it is a common, inexpensive fix.
- Transmission issues: Issues like shifting problems and leaks from rubber cooler lines were not uncommon on models with an automatic transmission.
- Worn brake rotors: Owners often report that the front brake rotors can wear unevenly, causing pulsations during braking.
- Front strut wear: The factory-installed struts on the S-Series may start to wear out after about 75,000 miles, affecting ride comfort and handling.
- Timing chain noise: Some engines, especially the DOHC variants, can develop timing chain noise due to a worn timing chain or tensioner.
- Ignition switch failure: An intermittent starting issue can be caused by a faulty ignition switch.
-
/
/ SW1: These base models were powered by the 1.9L SOHC engine (approx. 100 horsepower) and offered higher fuel economy.
- SL2 /
SC2
/
SW2: These upscale models featured the more powerful 1.9L DOHC engine (approx. 124 horsepower) and came with more standard equipment.
- Body style differences: The SC coupe was notable for having a third, rear-hinged door on the driver’s side for easy access to the back seat. The SW wagon offered more cargo space.
