- 1991: The Saturn SL sedan was the first model released, followed shortly by the Saturn SC coupe.
- 1992: The Saturn SW wagon was introduced.
- 1993: The existing SC coupe was renamed SC2, and a lower-cost SC1 trim was added. The SW wagon followed the same trim convention, with the SW1 and SW2 trims introduced. Driver-side airbags became standard, and ABS with traction control was offered on automatic transmission-equipped models.
- Engine oil consumption: The 1.9L engines are widely known for consuming oil, and owners should check the oil level frequently to avoid damage.
- Alternator failure: Stalling or the “charge” light illuminating can be the result of a failed alternator.
- Timing chain noise: A noisy timing chain or tensioner is often reported and can cause engine noise.
- Automatic transmission issues: The automatic transmission can develop shifting problems, including “hunting” for the right gear, and some rubber cooler lines can leak fluid.
- Rear-wheel bearing issues: Some owners have reported rear-wheel bearings failing prematurely.
- Electrical faults: Minor electrical problems can occur, and faulty electrical components, including starters and alternators, were a common complaint.
- Stiff suspension: The ride quality on some models can be harsh, especially on rough roads.
- Front brake pulsations: The front brake rotors can wear unevenly, causing a pulsing feeling in the pedal when braking.
- Faulty speedometer: Some early S-Series models with analog trip odometers were known to have issues with the speedometer.
- Used vehicles: Use classifieds websites like Craigslist and other local marketplaces.
- Used parts: Websites like eBay and LKQ Online are the best source for used OEM parts.
- Aftermarket parts: Retailers such as Engine Parts Only and other online parts stores offer a wide selection of new and aftermarket parts, including complete engine rebuild kits.
