- Oil leaks: Older 9000s are susceptible to oil leaks, commonly from the valve cover gasket and other seals.
- Engine stalling: Various electrical and sensor issues can cause the engine to stall unexpectedly, such as a failing crank position sensor or idle control valve.
- Boost and turbo issues: Problems with the Automatic Performance Control (APC) solenoid can cause issues with boost pressure, leading to either lack of boost or over-boost conditions.
- Electrical gremlins: Intermittent electrical issues are common on these older models. Parasitic battery drain can be caused by faulty alternator diodes, old wiring harnesses, or malfunctioning relays. A specific issue with the 1991 model involved the timer relay for the cooling fan, which could cause a battery drain.
- Head gasket failure: As with any older vehicle, especially those with many miles, head gasket failure is a known issue.
- Water pump failure: Water pumps can fail, leading to overheating and noise.
- Transmission issues (automatic): On automatic models, coolant can leak into the transmission fluid through the radiator cooler, leading to major transmission problems. Symptoms include whining noises, delayed engagement, or slipping.
- Cosmetic and body issues: With these cars being up to 40 years old, cosmetic issues are to be expected. Finding replacement trim, buttons, or other interior and exterior pieces can be a challenge.
- 1985–1991 (Early models): The initial Saab 9000 was exclusively a five-door hatchback and was known for its solid engineering. A sedan version (CD) was introduced in 1989.
- 1991–1998 (CD/CS/Aero): Later models featured a revised interior and exterior styling. The hatchback was designated as the CS, and a high-performance Aero model was also introduced, featuring a more powerful engine and upgraded interior.
- B234 engine: The later B234 engines are considered some of the best engines Saab ever made.
- Online marketplaces: Websites like eBay are good sources for used and aftermarket parts, including Saab 9000 turbo manifolds and trim pieces.
- Specialty Saab retailers: Some specialized Saab dealerships, like Schmelz Countryside Saab, still stock and sell genuine OEM parts.
- Used parts sellers: Online sellers and forums are a source for used parts, including components for the engine, trim, and other parts.
