For decades, Mercury and Mariner brands offered a range of two-stroke outboard engines, with Mariner models being virtually identical to Mercury but targeted toward international markets. Over time, these two-stroke engine models received improvements in fuel and ignition systems, moving from carbureted to more advanced fuel-injected configurations.

Inline-3 cylinder engines

The 70, 75, and 90 horsepower (hp) models used an inline-3 cylinder design during much of the two-stroke era.

70 hp: A popular and smooth-running 3-cylinder engine, produced until around 1997.
75 hp: Often an oil-injected, 84.6 cubic inch (1386cc), 3-cylinder engine.
90 hp: Early 90 hp models were also 3-cylinders. Later versions were part of the more powerful V6 family.

Inline-4 cylinder engines

The 125 hp model was an inline-4 cylinder engine, designed for mid-range power and better torque than the 3-cylinder models.

125 hp: A 4-cylinder, oil-injected, loop-charged engine with 113 cubic inches (1848cc) of displacement.

V6 engines

The 90, 100, 115, and 125 hp models were offered as V6 engines in later years, providing better acceleration and a smoother ride due to their balanced design.

90 hp V6: In the 1990s and 2000s, Mercury transitioned the 90 hp to a V6 platform for improved performance.
100 hp: Used a V6 design, featuring a loop-charged induction system and a 40-amp alternator on 1996 models.
115 hp: Offered as a V6, often paired with the “Black Max” nameplate.
125 hp V6: In addition to the inline-4, a V6 version was also available.

Jet drive engines

For shallow-water boating, Mercury offered several of these models as jet drives.

65/80 Jet: Models such as the 65/80 Jet were available, especially on the more robust V6 platforms.
105 Jet: A V6 jet drive with 2.0L displacement.
