Since the 1980s, Mercury and Mariner have essentially been the same outboard motors, with the key difference being paint color. The Mariner brand was originally created by
Mercury Marine to appeal to a different market segment with a reputation for durability, but the underlying engineering and components were largely identical to the Mercury models. In certain cases, especially with older, smaller engines, some Mariner outboards were licensed versions of Yamaha or Tohatsu motors.
- 25–30 HP: These are the lightest 3-cylinder outboards in their class. They are compatible with SmartCraft digital gauges and are engineered for quick acceleration. For example, the Mercury
25HP EFI Tiller Four Stroke Outboard Motor features a 3-cylinder, 500cc displacement engine, is available with either manual or electric start, and can come with either a 15-inch or 20-inch shaft.
- 40–60 HP: These models feature a high-displacement, four-cylinder, single-overhead-cam design to deliver smooth and powerful performance.
has a 995cc displacement and runs in the 5500–6000 RPM range. The 60HP EFI Four Stroke is known for its excellent fuel efficiency and ability to handle heavy loads, like pontoons, with a 2.33:1 gear ratio.
- Shared parts: Parts for Mariner engines are the same as those for comparable Mercury outboards. Many aftermarket parts, such as ignition coils and fuel pumps, are labeled as fitting both Mercury and Mariner models.
- Engine oil: Mercury Marine recommends its FC-W certified 4-stroke marine oils, such as Mercury 10W-30 or
. These oils are formulated specifically for the marine environment to provide superior corrosion resistance and wear protection. According to PartsVu, a one-gallon container of the Mercury Marine 25W-40 Synthetic Blend Oil is priced at about $67.
- Gear lube: For outboard lower units under 75 horsepower, use
Mercury Premium SAE 80W90 Gear Lube for maximum protection and performance. According to PartsVu, the capacity for a 60 HP outboard’s lower unit is approximately 10.8 oz.
