• Inline-2, -3, and -4 cylinders: Mercury offered various two-stroke outboards in different configurations and horsepower ratings. For example, a 
  1996 Tracker 40 hp outboard

   was a 4-cylinder, two-stroke model. A 

  2001 Mercury 50 hp outboard

   was a 3-cylinder two-stroke.

• Fuel system: Most were carbureted, but Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) became common on higher-horsepower models toward the end of the 1990s.
• V6 engines: The high-performance V6 outboards, such as the 
  150 hp

  200 hp Black Max

  , were popular choices for large boats and performance hulls in the early 1990s. 

• Technology: Optimax engines used an air-assisted direct-injection system to atomize fuel, resulting in better fuel economy and lower emissions compared to conventional two-strokes.
• Performance: The DFI system delivered improved hole-shot performance and acceleration.
• Timeline: Optimax models first appeared on high-horsepower V6 engines, with the 200/225 hp models being among the first in 1997. Smaller displacements were added later.
• Reliability: Early models had some reported issues, but by the 2002 model year, many bugs had been worked out. 

• Portables (9.9 hp and 50 hp): In 1995, Mercury introduced its first four-stroke outboards in 9.9 hp and 50 hp versions.
• Benefits: Four-strokes were noted for their quiet, smooth, and fuel-efficient operation, particularly at low speeds. A 1998 25 hp four-stroke was a carbureted model, for instance. 

• Technology: These were self-contained units that featured a water jet for thrust instead of a propeller.
• Performance:
  • 90 hp: Introduced in 1993, this was one of the first Sport Jet models.
  • 210/240 hp: Later, more powerful models were developed, with some receiving EFI.
