(WINDOWS 11, WINDOWS 10, WINDOWS 8 ETC.)
Windows/Mac
- Engine: These models were powered by a 3.0L SOHC V6 engine that produced around 155 horsepower, providing adequate but not overwhelming performance for its size.
- Drivetrain: Rear-wheel drive was standard, and an optional part-time 4WD system was available, which was a unique feature for minivans of that era.
- Transmission issues: As older vehicles, the automatic transmissions can experience issues like delayed engagement, slipping, or harsh shifts.
- Ignition system: Ignition switch failures, which led to an overheating and fire risk, resulted in a major recall in 2015.
- Starting problems:
Issues can arise from a faulty ignition switch, weak battery, or worn starter.
- Rust: Given their age, many first-gen MPVs suffer from rust, particularly in northern climates where road salt is used.
- Ticking noise: A ticking sound from the valve lash adjusters is common and can be a sign of infrequent oil changes
.
-
- 2000–2001: Powered by a 2.5L DOHC V6 producing 170 horsepower. It was paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission.
- 2002–2005: Used a Ford-sourced 3.0L V6 that produced around 200 horsepower. The 2002–2003 models had a 4-speed automatic, while the 2004–2005 models were updated to a 5-speed automatic transmission.
- 2006: Featured the same 3.0L V6 but received a software update to address earlier transmission issues.
- Transmission issues: The automatic transmissions, particularly in the 2000–2005 models, are a major source of concern. Issues range from harsh shifting and slipping to outright failure.
- Engine electronics: Failures with ignition coils and other sensors are common and can cause misfires and engine stalling.
- Cooling fan module:
A faulty cooling fan control module can cause the cooling fan to run constantly or not at all, leading to overheating.
- Electrical system: Issues with wiring, fuses, and sensors can cause various electrical malfunctions.
- Takata airbag recall: Some 2003–2005 models are included in the Takata airbag recall, and vehicle owners should confirm if the recall repair was performed.
Which generation is right for you?
- For durability and a unique platform: The first generation (1990–1998) is an interesting option for those who want a more truck-like, durable minivan with optional 4WD. However, finding one in good condition with a complete service history can be difficult due to their age and potential for rust.
- For modern convenience and features:
The second generation (2000–2006) offers a more modern ride with sliding doors and a fold-away third row. However, serious transmission and electrical issues are known to plague this generation, especially earlier models, making a pre-purchase inspection and service history review essential.
