The 2014 and 2015 Kia Sportage represent the later years of the vehicle’s third generation (SL platform). While structurally identical to the 2013 model, the 2014 model year brought a vital mid-cycle refresh that introduced heavily upgraded base engines, reworked cabin hardware, and high-performance suspension dampers to smooth out a notoriously stiff ride. The 2015 model was carried over virtually unchanged from the 2014 updates.

Engine Options & Performance Boost

The 2014 and 2015 models feature two updated Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) powertrain configurations:

2.4-liter Theta II GDI 4-Cylinder: Found on the Base, LX, and EX trims. The upgrade to direct injection for 2014 bumped output up to 182 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque (up from 176 hp). It is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission.
2.0-liter Turbocharged Theta II GDI: Exclusive to the sport-tuned SX trim. It produces a robust 260 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque, delivering much sharper acceleration with only a slight fuel economy penalty.

Front-wheel drive (FWD) is standard across all tiers, while the Dynamax All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system was an available option on LX, EX, and SX trims.

Key Refresh Enhancements (2014 vs. 2015)

If you are cross-shopping these two specific years, they are functionally identical, but both contain major improvements over earlier 2011–2013 models:

Ride Quality: Both years received standard high-performance dampers. This addressed widespread consumer complaints regarding the pre-facelift model’s brutally stiff, choppy ride.
Interior Flexibility: A tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel became standard line-wide, alongside standard reclining outboard rear seatbacks and dedicated rear-seat air vents.
Tech Upgrades: The EX and SX trims gained an updated, voice-controlled infotainment system and standard heated front seats. The premium SX trim added standard High-Intensity Discharge (HID) headlights and distinct LED taillights.

Critical Recalls & Fire Hazards

The 2014 and 2015 model years are flagged by severe federal safety recalls that demand attention before purchasing or driving:

HECU Electrical Short & Fire Risk: A critical recall impacts 2014–2016 Sportage models regarding the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU). The internal circuit board can suffer an electrical short, creating a risk of an engine compartment fire while driving or parked. Kia issues an urgent “Park Outside” safety advisory until a dealership installs a revised, safer fuse to mitigate the short-circuit risk.
Theta II Engine Wear & Failure: Though earlier years had it worse, 2014 and 2015 models equipped with the 2.4L and 2.0T engines fall under expanded campaigns for premature connecting rod bearing wear. Debris or oil starvation can cause sudden engine knocking and catastrophic engine seizure while in motion.
High-Pressure Fuel Pipe Leaks: A secondary recall exists for models that received engine work or swaps. If the high-pressure fuel pipe was misaligned or improperly torqued during service, it can crack and leak fuel onto hot engine surfaces, presenting an immediate fire hazard.

Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS) Note

As part of extensive class-action lawsuits, these vehicles received a mandatory software update installing a Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS).
