The 2016 Kia Sportage marks the final model year of the vehicle’s third generation (SL platform). Rather than implementing major mechanical upgrades, Kia focused on shuffling standard equipment and premium cabin features before introducing a completely redesigned fourth-generation model for 2017.

Engine Options & Performance

The 2016 Sportage carries over the exact same powertrain lineup from the 2014 and 2015 models, paired exclusively with a 6-speed automatic transmission:

2.4-liter Theta II GDI 4-Cylinder: Standard on LX and EX trims, delivering 182 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque.
2.0-liter Turbocharged Theta II GDI: Exclusive to the sport-tuned SX trim, boosting output to 260 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque.

Front-wheel drive (FWD) comes standard, while an intelligent All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system is available across all trim configurations.

2016 Model Year Equipment Updates

As the final run of its generation, the 2016 model added luxury features as standard equipment to higher trims to increase competitive value:

LX Trim Upgrades: The optional LX Popular Package was upgraded to include a standard touchscreen display and a rearview backup camera.
