- 3.0L V6: Found in the base XJ6, this engine is derived from the Ford Duratec and produces approximately 240 horsepower. It is generally reliable but can suffer from radiator swelling.
- 4.2L Naturally Aspirated V8: Offered in the XJ8, this engine produces around 294 horsepower and is known for its durability. It is considered one of the more reliable options.
- 4.2L Supercharged V8: This engine was fitted to the high-performance XJR model, producing around 400 horsepower.
- 2.7L Twin-Turbo Diesel V6 (TDVi): Introduced in 2005 for European markets, this engine was developed in partnership with Peugeot and produces 204 horsepower. Overfilling the oil can cause significant engine damage.
- Air suspension failure: A common issue is a faulty air compressor, which can cause an “Air Suspension Fault” message and cause the vehicle to sag. Leaks in the air springs or issues with height sensors can also be a problem.
- Electrical system glitches: The complex electronics can experience intermittent failures, including malfunctioning gauges, unresponsive keyless entry, or dim lights. Issues can sometimes be traced to faulty fuses, relays, or wire harness corrosion.
- Aluminum body corrosion: Despite being aluminum, the body can still develop corrosion, usually where steel rivets come into contact with the aluminum panels. Signs include bubbling or blistering paint.
- Control arm bush failure: The double wishbone suspension, while great for handling, can cause the suspension bushes to wear out relatively quickly, sometimes lasting only about five years.
- Crankshaft failure (2.7 TDVi): The twin-turbo diesel engine is susceptible to main bearing failure due to contaminated or diluted oil, which can lead to crankshaft failure.
- Ignition coil failure: This can lead to engine misfires and poor idling, and is a common problem.
- Reliability vs. age: While generally regarded as more reliable than earlier Jaguar models, the X350 is an older, complex luxury car, and expensive maintenance and repairs are to be expected.
- Expensive service: Service is expensive, especially for supercharged models or problems requiring specialized diagnostic tools. Using a reputable independent Jaguar specialist can sometimes be more cost-effective than a dealership.
- Excellent ride quality: The air suspension provides a superb and agile ride with minimal body roll.
- Watch for bargain buys: The significant depreciation means that low-mileage examples with good service history are the best buys. Buyers should be cautious of the cheapest models, as they may have deferred maintenance that could lead to higher costs later.
