- 2006: Powered exclusively by a 3.5L Vortec Inline-5 (L52) engine pushing 220 hp. It is widely considered underpowered for the vehicle’s heavy 4,700-lb curb weight.
- 2007: The I-5 engine was bored out to a 3.7L Vortec (LLR), raising output to 242 hp. This added much-needed highway passing confidence.
- 2008 – 2009: Hummer introduced the Alpha trim, equipped with a 5.3L Vortec V8 (LH8) producing 300 hp. This variant utilized a unique cast-iron engine block to fit the tight engine bay and featured an upgraded front differential housing (cast iron instead of aluminum) to handle the torque.
- Launch Mechanics: Standard full-time 4WD system with a 2-speed transfer case.
- Known Flaw: Early 2006 3.5L engines are notorious for soft valve seats, which cause cylinder head failures and rough idling.
- Mechanical Fixes: The upgraded 3.7L engine fixed the notorious 2006 valve seat issue.
- Interior Tweaks: Minor trim changes, improved window switch locations, and standard electronic stability control (StabiliTrak).
- The V8 Alpha: The Alpha model arrived, offering a massive 6,000-lb towing capacity (up from 4,500 lbs on the I-5).
- Safety Upgrades: Side curtain airbags became standard equipment across all trim lines.
- Off-Road Peak: The Adventure Package (on I-5 models) and Off-Road Package (on Alpha models) received a driver-selectable front locking differential to match the existing rear locker.
- H3T Variant: Hummer launched the H3T, a unique crew-cab pickup truck version featuring a 5-foot bed.
- Plastic Radiator Tanks: The factory radiator plastic end-tanks are prone to cracking near the top hose connector, causing sudden coolant loss.
- Steering Rack Bushings: The factory rubber steering rack bushings wear out quickly, causing sloppy steering play when running oversized off-road tires.
- Transfer Case Shift Fork: Pre-2009 models utilized a plastic shift fork inside the transfer case. It can break over time, preventing the vehicle from shifting into 4WD High-Lock or 4WD Low.
