The 2009 to 2015 Honda Pilot marks the entire production run of the vehicle’s second generation. This era of the Pilot is highly recognized for its boxy, traditional SUV silhouette, massive interior volume with a standard 8-passenger layout, and a highly reliable mechanically driven platform that received a mid-cycle refresh for the 2012 model year.

Core Powertrain Specifications

Every single second-generation Honda Pilot relies on the exact same engine and transmission layout, regardless of trim level or production year:

Engine: 3.5L 24-valve SOHC i-VTEC V6 (J35Z4).
Transmission: 5-speed heavy-duty automatic.
Output: 250 horsepower and 253 lb-ft of torque.
Drivetrain Choices: Available in standard Front-Wheel Drive (FWD) or optional Variable Torque Management 4-Wheel Drive (VTM-4).

The Mid-Cycle Shift: 2009–2011 vs. 2012–2015

Phase 1: 2009, 2010, and 2011 Model Years

Design Language: Features a distinctive, starkly utilitarian look with a heavy grey-accented fascia and clear headlight lenses.
Interior Environment: The center console stack uses a high-density matrix of solid plastic buttons. It lacks modern integrated display technology on lower trims.
Wheel Gear: Base LX trims featured 17-inch steel wheels, while EX and above models jumped to 17-inch aluminum alloys.

Phase 2: 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015 Model Years (The Refresh)

Aesthetic Facelift: Honda switched out the aggressive front fascia for a sleeker, three-slat chrome grille and redesigned aerodynamic headlights.
Efficiency Gains: Engine internal frictions were reduced, aerodynamic belly pans were added, and lower rolling-resistance tires were introduced. This increased highway fuel efficiency from 22 mpg up to 25 mpg.
Cabin Electronics: An 8-inch high-resolution intelligent Multi-Information Display (i-MID) screen became standard equipment on all trims. Bluetooth audio streaming and a factory backup camera became standard.
2015 SE (Special Edition): Positioned between the EX and EX-L trims, this final-year edition packaged together unique pewter-grey aluminum alloy wheels, a power moonroof, satellite radio, and a factory overhead rear entertainment DVD player.

Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) and Known Failure Points

While highly durable mechanically, this specific generation of Pilot exhibits a few engineering vulnerabilities that second-hand buyers must check carefully:

1. Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) Oil Consumption

To optimize fuel usage, the 3.5L engine uses VCM to deactivate 2 or 3 cylinders during highway cruising.

The Issue: The continuous cylinder deactivation creates vacuum imbalances inside the dead combustion chambers. This pulls oil past the piston rings, fouling the spark plugs and causing excessive oil burning, engine misfires (Error Codes P0301-P0304), and premature motor mount failure.
The Fix: Many owners install an aftermarket “VCM Muzzler” device, which disables the cylinder drop feature, forcing the engine to run smoothly on all 6 cylinders permanently.

2. Compliance Bushing Failure

The heavy physical weight of the Pilot puts extreme load on the front lower control arm compliance bushings. The factory rubber cracks and tears apart completely over time. If you hear a distinct clunking sound when braking or driving over low bumps, the front compliance bushings require complete replacement.

3. Power Steering Fluid Leaks

The power steering rack and pump lines on the 2009–2011 models are prone to weeping fluid out of the high-pressure hose crimp joints. This air contamination causes a distinct groaning or whining sound when turning the steering wheel sharply during cold mornings.

4. Timing Belt Maintenance

Unlike newer models that use timing chains, this 3.5L V6 engine utilizes a standard rubber timing belt. Because it is an interference engine design, a snapped belt will catastrophically destroy the internal valves. Ensure the timing belt, tensioner, and water pump assembly have been swapped out every 105,000 miles.
