-
2.5L I4
: The standard engine, producing 200 horsepower and 191 lb-ft of torque. It is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and is generally considered adequate but not very powerful.
-
3.6L V6
: The most common option, offering 308 horsepower and 275 lb-ft of torque. It is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and provides robust acceleration for a mid-size truck.
-
2.8L Duramax® Turbo-Diesel
: An available option on certain trims, this engine provides superior towing capacity and fuel efficiency. It delivers 181 horsepower and a hefty 369 lb-ft of torque, and is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission.
- Max towing: Up to 7,700 pounds with the available Duramax diesel engine, a class-leading figure at the time.
- Max payload: The maximum payload capacity is around 1,605 pounds with the diesel engine.
-
Elevation Standard
: The base model includes a 7-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and a power-adjustable driver’s seat.
-
Elevation
: Adds an upgraded 8-inch touchscreen, automatic climate control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot.
-
AT4
: This was a new trim for 2021 and replaced the previous All Terrain model. It features an off-road suspension, 31-inch Goodyear® Wrangler® DuraTrac® tires, a locking rear differential, and hill descent control.
-
Denali
: The top-tier luxury trim offers unique exterior styling, heated and ventilated leather-appointed front seats, a heated steering wheel, and a Bose® premium audio system.
- Infotainment: A 7-inch or 8-inch touchscreen with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto provides an intuitive and modern interface.
- Cabin space: While the Crew Cab offers seating for up to five, the rear seat space is adequate but not as spacious as some larger rivals. Extended Cab models have much more limited rear legroom.
- Interior materials: Higher-end trims like the AT4 and Denali feature more premium materials, but some reviewers felt the overall interior design and some low-grade materials in lower trims showed the truck’s age.
- Reliability: The 2021 Canyon received mixed reviews for reliability, with an “Average” predicted reliability score of 79 out of 100 from U.S. News. Some consumer reviews on Kelley Blue Book cite issues with the transmission and electrical systems.
- Safety: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave the 2021 Canyon a four-out-of-five-star overall safety rating. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave “Good” ratings in most crash tests but noted a “Marginal” rating for the passenger-side small overlap front test.
- Seat belt bolts: In December 2020, GM recalled some 2021 models for incorrectly fastened seat belt bolts, which could prevent proper occupant restraint in a crash.
- Tire and Loading placard: In July 2021, a recall was issued because the Tire and Loading Information label had an incorrect load-carrying capacity listed.
- You can check for any open recalls by entering a vehicle’s VIN on the NHTSA website.
