- 2.4-liter 16-Valve 4-Cylinder: Standard on lower trims like the SE and SXT. It generates 173 horsepower and 166 lb-ft of torque. Critically, it is mated to an obsolete 4-speed automatic transmission, making the vehicle loud, slow, and heavily underpowered when carrying passengers. It is strictly available in Front-Wheel Drive (FWD).
- 3.6-liter Pentastar V6: Standard on the GT trim and optional on others. It delivers a robust 283 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, paired with a vastly superior 6-speed automatic transmission. This engine is highly recommended by automotive reviewers and can be configured with All-Wheel Drive (AWD).
- 2017: Offered across five trims (SE, SXT, Crossroad, Crossroad Plus, and GT). Third-row seating was an optional add-on for the lower tiers.
- 2018: Trim levels were streamlined down to four (dropping the Crossroad Plus). Crucially, third-row seating became standard on every single 2018 model, converting the entire lineup into mandatory 7-passenger vehicles.
- Cruise Control Lock-On Recall: A major recall affects over 4.8 million FCA vehicles—including 2014–2018 Journeys. A potential electrical short circuit in the powertrain wiring can prevent the cruise control system from disengaging. This requires a dealership to perform a critical engine control module software flash.
- Dim Headlight Reflectors Recall: In late 2022, Dodge recalled over 83,000 Journeys from the 2017 and 2018 model years. The factory amber side reflex reflectors inside the headlight assemblies do not shine brightly enough, violating federal safety standards and reducing nighttime visibility. Dealerships replace the entire headlamp assembly for free.
- Plastic Oil Filter Housing Cracks: Models equipped with the 3.6L V6 frequently develop engine oil leaks. The factory plastic oil filter adapter housing sits in the engine valley and cracks over time due to heat cycling or over-tightening during oil changes, pooling oil on top of the engine block.
- Spontaneous Active Head Restraint Deployment: The internal mechanisms inside the front seats can fail unexpectedly, causing the active safety headrests to violently snap forward with no rear-end impact, posing a risk of injury to occupants.
- Premature Brake Wear: Due to the vehicle’s heavy weight being stopped by relatively small, undersized factory brake rotors and pads, owners report needing brake replacements far more frequently than normal crossover intervals.
