- Engines: The lineup featured a choice of three engines across these years:
- 1.5-liter Turbo: The standard engine on most trims (L, LS, RS, LT), producing around 160 horsepower. It was paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission until 2019, when it switched to a CVT.
- 2.0-liter Turbo: Available on the Premier trim, this engine delivers 250 horsepower and is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission (2016-2018) and later a 9-speed automatic transmission (2017-2019).
- 1.8-liter Hybrid: Available from 2016-2019, this powertrain offered exceptional fuel economy (up to 46-47 MPG combined).
- Technology: Models from 2016 offered the MyLink infotainment system, with the 2019 model year upgrading to the newer Infotainment 3 system, which supports swiping gestures. Standard features across the range often include Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto integration from the LS trim upwards.
- Safety: Standard safety includes 10 airbags and the OnStar emergency response system. Available advanced safety features (often in Driver Confidence packages) included adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and forward collision avoidance systems.
- Styling (2019 Refresh): The 2019 Malibu received a refreshed exterior with new headlights, taillights, and a revised grille. A new sporty RS trim was also introduced, featuring blacked-out styling cues and an integrated rear spoiler.
- “Shift to Park” Message: A common complaint, particularly for 2016-2018 models, involves a persistent “Shift to Park” message that can prevent the car from turning off properly or drain the battery if headlights remain on. This is often due to a faulty sensor in the shifter assembly.
- Sudden Loss of Power: A class-action lawsuit for 2016-2018 models alleges a defective electronic throttle control or accelerator pedal position sensor can cause the car to abruptly lose power while driving.
- Transmission Issues: Some owners, particularly of early ninth-generation models, report issues such as hard shifting, hesitation, or slipping transmission.
- Fuel Pump Recalls: Certain 2018 models were included in recalls related to the fuel pump, which could cause stalling or starting problems.
