The 1997–2004 Chevrolet Corvette marks the complete run of the fifth-generation (C5) platform. This generation completely revolutionized the Corvette by introducing a hydroformed box frame, a rear-mounted transaxle for near 50:50 weight distribution, and the debut of the legendary generation III LS1 V8 engine.

Platform Breakdown

Coupe (1997–2004): Features a removable body-color or transparent Targa roof panel.
Convertible (1998–2004): Built with a dedicated trunk space separate from the cabin, resolving the cargo issues of previous drop-tops.
Fixed Roof Coupe / FRC (1999–2000): Offered a lighter, stiffer body configuration with a fixed structural roof. It was initially intended to be a budget model but laid the groundwork for the ultimate performance variant.
Z06 (2001–2004): Built exclusively on the FRC body style. It features the higher-output LS6 V8, upgraded suspension, wider wheels, and thinner glass for weight reduction.

Known Weaknesses to Check

EBCM Failure (Electronic Brake Control Module): Pre-2001 models (1997–2000) use an older EBCM design that is completely out of production and cannot be rebuilt. If it fails, standard braking works, but ABS and Traction Control are permanently disabled unless you source a rare used unit.
Column Lock Issue: The steering column anti-theft locking mechanism frequently malfunctions, leaving the steering wheel permanently locked. Most owners install an aftermarket “Column Lock Bypass” kit to remove the physical mechanism entirely.
Wobbly Harmonic Balancer: The factory crankshaft pulley balancer separates over time. It causes a visible wobble, belt squeal, and can eventually slide off and damage the front engine timing cover.
Rocking Seats: The plastic shims inside the power seat tracks degrade, causing the seats to slide back and forth slightly under acceleration and braking. Cheap aftermarket shim kits fix this issue.
