- Sport Coupe (1982–1988): The base model entry point, initially featuring single square headlamps before a modern aerodynamic front fascia was adopted for later base models.
- Berlinetta (1982–1986): The luxury-focused variant. It is famous for its futuristic interior, starship-like digital dashboard layout, and a unique swiveling center-pod cassette radio.
- Z28 (1982–1992): The primary performance model, boasting standard ground effects, functional hood louvers (on early models), a stiffer sport suspension, and standard wide five-spoke alloy wheels.
- IROC-Z (1985–1990): Named after the International Race of Champions. It became the definitive cultural symbol of the 1985–1990 era, featuring upgraded Delco-Bilstein gas shocks, larger sway bars, lowered ride height, and unique 16-inch aluminum wheels.
- 2.5L “Iron Duke” 4-Cylinder (1982–1985): The lowest-performing engine in Camaro history (~90 hp). It was dropped due to poor performance specs.
- V6 Choices (2.8L / 3.1L): Reliable base engine upgrades that transitioned from a carbureted 2.8L to a multi-port fuel-injected (MFI) 3.1L version by 1990.
- 5.0L 305 Small-Block V8: The high-volume V8 option. It evolved from a sluggish 4-barrel carburetor up to the highly desirable L98 Tuned Port Injection (TPI) configuration.
- 5.7L 350 TPI V8 (1987–1992): The undisputed performance king of the 3rd Gen platform. Borrowed straight from the Corvette, it produced up to 245 horsepower. Note: Due to its extreme torque limits, GM only paired this engine with the 700R4 4-speed automatic transmission; no factory manual was ever offered with the 5.7L V8.
- 1982: Generation launch. Introduces a standard rear glass hatchback and a coil-spring MacPherson front suspension.
- 1985: The legendary IROC-Z model debuts. Fresh front/rear fascias are introduced across the lineup.
- 1987: The convertible body layout returns to the Camaro lineup for the first time since 1969. The high-output 5.7L 350 TPI V8 officially launches.
- 1991: Received a major mid-cycle refresh known to enthusiasts as the “B4C/RS ground effects update,” featuring aggressive scoops, distinct lower body styling, and a tall rear spoiler on Z28 models.
- 1992: The final production year. All 1992 models received a “Heritage Edition” dashboard badge to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Camaro platform.
- T-Top Roof Leaks: Models equipped with removable factory T-Tops are notorious for dry-rotting rubber seals. Water easily bypasses the seals, soaking the floorboards and causing floor pan rust holes under the carpet.
- Cracked Steering Box Frame Rail: The high-torque steering strain caused by wide 16-inch factory wheels regularly stresses the unibody frame rail surrounding the steering gearbox. Check for structural hairline metal fractures or installing a steering box brace (commonly called a “Wonderbar”).
- Saggy Hatchback Struts & Trunks: The massive rear glass hatch is exceptionally heavy. The hydraulic struts wear down every few years, causing the heavy glass to crash down unexpectedly.
- TPI Fuel Injector Shorting: On 1989–1992 TPI engines, the factory Multec fuel injectors have internal coils exposed to fuel. Over time, modern ethanol fuels degrade the insulation, causing the injectors to short out electrically when the engine reaches full operating temperature.
