The Triumph Sprint ST models produced between 2005 and 2010 are equipped with a larger, 1050cc engine, upgraded from the 955cc engine used on earlier models. This makes it a sportier, more powerful version of the sport-touring motorcycle, known for its versatile performance and distinctive three-cylinder exhaust note. Key features include its robust inline triple engine, rock-solid handling, and a single-sided swingarm.
- Engine: A fuel-injected, liquid-cooled 1050cc inline-triple engine producing around 123–125 horsepower and 77 foot-pounds of torque. This engine replaced the 955cc version and is known for its tractable powerband and torque.
- Aesthetics: Distinctive for its three-pipe, under-seat exhaust, three-headlight front end, and a single-sided swingarm.
- Ergonomics: Features a sporty, yet reasonably upright riding position. The stock seat can be uncomfortable for some riders on long trips, but aftermarket options like gel seats are available to improve comfort.
- Handling: Known for its rock-solid, precise, and agile handling, even with a sport-touring setup. Pre-2007 models have slightly lower handlebars than later versions.
- Technology: Standard models have no ABS, but it became an optional extra from 2007 onwards.
- Production Changes: Production of the ST was winding down in 2010 to make way for the successor, the Sprint GT.
- Fairing: Some 2010 models may have been fitted with fairings originally intended for the Sprint GT, which offer better weather protection and improved headlights. Finding a 2010 ST with the GT fairing is considered by some to be the “best of both worlds,” combining the better handling of the ST with the GT’s superior touring amenities.
- Regulator/Rectifier Failure: The charging system is a known weak point on these bikes. The regulator/rectifier or stator can fail, leading to electrical gremlins or battery problems. Aftermarket parts are available as replacements.
- Seized Eccentric Adjuster: The single-sided swingarm’s eccentric adjuster is prone to seizing up if not regularly greased and maintained. This is a common issue on older bikes with this setup.
- Clunky Gearbox: The gearbox is known for being a bit clunky, but as long as all gears engage smoothly on a test ride, it’s generally not a problem.
- Cracked Fuel Line Connectors: The plastic fuel line connectors can become brittle and crack if not handled carefully, especially when the tank is removed for maintenance.
- Engine Performance: Earlier iterations of the 1050cc engine may produce more heat and vibration. A jerky throttle can sometimes be resolved by balancing the throttle bodies.
- Poor Headlights: The headlights on earlier ST models are often cited as weak, though some late-production 2010 models may have the better GT fairing and lights.
