The 2003–2005 Nissan Murano was the first generation of Nissan’s mid-size crossover SUV. All models came equipped with a 3.5-liter V6 engine, a continuously variable transmission (CVT), and seating for five passengers.

Trim levels

Known problems

The first-generation Murano is known for a few issues that can be expensive to repair.

CVT transmission failure: The CVT is a common point of failure for early Murano’s, with symptoms including slipping, jerking, or delayed shifts. Some reports claim failures can occur due to overheating or fluid contamination.
Engine mounts: Worn or failed engine mounts were common.
Power steering leaks: Some drivers reported loss of power steering due to leaks.
Intake air duct separation: A recall was issued for 2003–2007 models because the intake air duct could separate from the resonator, potentially causing the engine to stall.
Fuel tank leaks: A recall was issued for a potential fuel tank leak in 2003 and 2004 models.
Alternator failure: A recall was issued for 2003 and 2004 models for potential alternator failure.
Other common issues: Some owners have reported faulty alternators and cracked exhaust manifolds.

CVT fluid: Given the known CVT issues, it’s particularly important to keep the CVT fluid at the correct level and replace it regularly.
