The period from 2009 to 2012 covers the second generation of the Mazda3, which featured distinctive “smiling” grille styling and an updated interior. The hot-hatch MAZDASPEED3 was also redesigned for the second generation, though its 2.3L turbocharged engine carried over from the previous generation
.

- 2010 model issues: It’s best to avoid the 2010 model year, which had the most complaints, including premature clutch failure and suspension problems.
- Transmission control module (TCM): A widespread issue in automatic transmission models is failure of the TCM, which can cause erratic shifting or complete loss of power.
- Premature clutch wear
: Manual transmission models, particularly from the 2010 model year, are known to have premature clutch failure.
- Rust issues: This generation is susceptible to rust, particularly in northern climates where salt is used on roads.
- Melting dashboard: Dashboards can become sticky or “melt” after prolonged sun exposure.
- Defective TPMS sensor valve stems
: A common issue is the corrosion and breaking of the metal stems for the tire pressure monitoring system.
- Rear suspension noise: Many owners report rattling or clunking from the rear suspension, often caused by loose sway bar links.
- Engine: 2.3L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, 263 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque.
- Transmission: 6-speed manual transmission.
- Drivetrain: The car is front-wheel-drive but uses a limited-slip differential to help manage the power and minimize torque steer
.
-
- Engine reliability: The MZR 2.3L DISI engine can be unreliable if not properly maintained, especially on cars with modifications or a hard life.
- Fuel pump issues: Early failure of the high-pressure fuel pump (HPFP) was a critical issue, and many owners upgrade to aftermarket pumps for better reliability.
- Boost leaks: Due to the high turbo pressure, boost leaks from cracked intercooler piping or loose vacuum lines are a common problem.
- Torque steer: Because all 263 horsepower is sent to the front wheels, torque steer is a notable characteristic, especially under hard acceleration.
- Motor mounts
: The stock motor mounts, especially the rear mount, are often seen as too weak and can fail over time, resulting in excessive engine movement.
