- Federalized bumpers: To meet U.S. safety regulations, the 124 Spider received larger, black rubber bumpers that replaced the more slender chrome bumpers of previous years.
- Ride height: The suspension was lifted slightly to accommodate the new bumpers, which affected the car’s handling.
- Engine: Continued to use the 1.8-liter (1,756 cc) Lampredi twin-cam engine. Horsepower was reduced to approximately 86 hp due to emission controls.
- Engine: The 1.8-liter engine remained the standard offering.
- Minor updates: The vehicle received minor changes to trim and interior components over these years.
- U.S. market only: The Fiat 124 Spider was only produced for the U.S. market between 1975 and 1981.
- Rebranded as Fiat Spider 2000: Fiat introduced a 2.0-liter (1,995 cc) engine and renamed the car to the “Fiat Spider 2000”.
- Carburetor: The new 2.0-liter engine was initially carbureted and produced around 86 hp, similar to the outgoing 1.8L engine due to emissions restrictions.
- Optional automatic transmission: A three-speed automatic transmission became available as an option.
- Fuel injection: Midway through the year, Bosch L-Jetronic fuel injection was introduced for California models. This system became optional in the other 49 states.
- Carburetor improvements: Some carburetor models received a more restrictive intake setup, leading to poorer performance.
- Interior and gauges: Minor differences in interior components and gauges were introduced.
- Standard fuel injection: For the North American market, the Bosch fuel-injected 2.0-liter engine became standard, boosting horsepower to 102 hp.
- Limited edition turbo model: Around 700 turbo models were produced for the U.S. market through a partnership with Legend Industries.
- Reintroduced in Europe: After a gap, the Spider was reintroduced to the European market.
- Last year of Fiat production: This was the final year that Fiat officially marketed the 124 Spider.
- Pininfarina production: Pininfarina took over production of the model, which would eventually be sold under their own name as the Pininfarina Spider Azzurra in the U.S..
- Continuation of features: The 1982 model continued with the same engine and features as the 1981 model year.
