- Body and Chassis: The C2 uses a shared platform with the Freightliner Business Class M2 medium-duty truck, which allows for common parts and simplified maintenance. It is built with all-steel construction and features a unique body design that utilizes adhesive bonding to reduce the number of rivets and welds.
- Visibility: A defining feature is its large, sloped, single-piece windshield and large windows, which provide a significantly larger visibility footprint than other Type C buses, enhancing safety in the loading zone.
- Driver Environment: The bus is designed with driver ergonomics in mind, including an automotive-style dashboard, a non-reflective instrument panel, and options like a telescoping steering wheel and adjustable pedals.
- Passenger Capacity: It can seat up to 81 children, making it one of the highest-capacity conventional buses available in North America.
- Safety: Key safety features include Saf-T-Net construction (side skirt reinforcement, extended roof bows), anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic stability control (ESC), and options for collision avoidance systems.
- Diesel Engines:
- Cummins B6.7 (formerly ISB 6.7): A common diesel engine option with various horsepower ratings (200-260 hp).
- Detroit DD5: A 4-cylinder engine available since late 2018, offering power ranging from 200 to 240 hp.
- Alternative Fuels:
- Propane: Utilizes a Powertrain Integration (now PSI) 8.0L V-8 or 8.8L engine designed specifically for propane.
- CNG (Compressed Natural Gas): Offered since 2016, powered by a version of the Cummins ISB 6.7 engine.
- Electric: The Saf-T-Liner C2 Jouley is an all-electric version using a Proterra battery-electric powertrain, first introduced as a prototype in 2017.
- Transmissions: Primarily paired with Allison automatic transmissions, such as the Allison 2300 PTS, 2500, and 3000 series.
- Emergency Exit Door Latch: Fasteners for the rear emergency exit door latch mechanism on certain 2019-2024 models might loosen, potentially allowing the door to open unexpectedly.
- Body Joint Strength: A potential issue with an interior body panel joint on certain 2024 models not meeting federal tensile requirements.
- Fuel Line Interference: A recall for some propane (LPG) models where fuel lines might rub against a body bracket, creating a fire risk.
