- Widespread issue: Many Tacomas from this generation suffer from severe rust and corrosion of the frame, which can lead to structural failure. The problem stems from inadequate rust-proofing from the factory, which allowed corrosion to develop from the inside out.
- Recall information: Toyota addressed this with a limited service campaign (LSC-E0D) that allowed owners to have their frame inspected, rust-proofed, or replaced entirely if perforation was found. This program expired in March 2016 for most affected models.
- Inspection is crucial: Any buyer should have the frame thoroughly inspected for rust damage. If the frame was replaced, check the dealer’s records to confirm the work was completed. Aftermarket frame repair kits are also available.
-
4.0L V6
: This engine was standard on higher trims and is a popular choice for its strong power and respectable towing capacity of up to 6,500 pounds. Early 2005–2006 V6 models were known to have overheating issues before Toyota re-tuned the cooling system for the 2007 model year.
-
2.7L I4
: The four-cylinder was the base engine on Regular Cab and some Access Cab models. It provides reliable and economical performance for everyday use but lacks the power of the V6.
- Automatic transmission issues: Some high-mileage Tacomas have reported erratic or harsh shifting. This can often be traced to a faulty throttle position sensor or a shift solenoid.
- Driveline vibration: Many V6 Tacoma models experience a “vibration” or “drone” at certain speeds. This has been a long-standing issue that Toyota addressed with TSBs, but some owners still report it.
- Headlight assemblies: The plastic headlight lenses can become melted or cracked due to heat from the bulbs, especially with daytime running lights. Toyota offered a warranty enhancement program for some models to fix this issue.
- Lower ball joints: Premature failure of the lower ball joints was reported on some models, though less common than on the previous generation. Toyota issued a recall for earlier models, but it’s still worth inspecting for excessive wear.
- Leaf spring recall: Some Pre-Runner and 4×4 models had a recall for fractured leaf springs. A broken leaf spring could potentially puncture the fuel tank. Toyota issued a recall to install new spring assemblies on affected vehicles.
- Cab types: Regular Cab, Access Cab, and Double Cab.
-
PreRunner
: A 2WD model with the higher ride height and off-road styling of the 4×4 versions.
-
TRD Off-Road
: Adds features like an electronic locking rear differential and Bilstein shocks for enhanced off-road performance.
-
X-Runner
: A factory-tuned sport truck with a V6 engine, lowered suspension, and aerodynamic body kit.
