-
2.2L inline-4 engine (L61)
: Initially paired with a troublesome CVT or a 5-speed manual transmission. After 2005, a standard automatic transmission became the only automatic option for the 4-cylinder.
-
3.0L V6 engine (L81)
: This Opel-sourced V6 was offered in 2002 and 2003 on all-wheel-drive models, then in front-wheel-drive models for 2003.
-
3.5L V6 engine (Honda J35A3)
: Beginning in 2004, a more powerful and reliable Honda V6, also used in the Honda Pilot and Acura MDX, became available. These are widely regarded as the most durable first-generation Vue powertrain.
- Transmission failure (CVT): The CVT, used in 4-cylinder Vues from 2002 to 2005, is notorious for failing prematurely, with symptoms including slipping, shuddering, and complete failure. A class-action lawsuit resulted in an extended warranty for affected owners.
- Engine oil leaks: Both 4-cylinder and V6 engines are known to develop oil leaks from the valve cover gasket and other seals as they age.
- Ignition switch recall: The 2002–2004 models were subject to a recall for a defective ignition switch that could allow the key to be removed while the engine was still on.
- AWD system issues: Problems with the all-wheel-drive system are known to occur, including issues with the Range Detection Module (RDM) on V6 AWD models.
- Electrical problems: Glitches in the electrical system, including issues with the Body Control Module (BCM) and ignition, can cause starting problems and other electrical malfunctions.
- Vibrations and rattling: Rattling noises can be caused by worn motor or transmission mounts, loose exhaust heat shields, or worn CV joints, especially in AWD V6 models.
- Used vehicle marketplaces: Use sites like Carfax, which lists available used vehicles and provides history reports.
- Online parts retailers: Online retailers like eBay offer both new and used OEM and aftermarket parts for 2002–2006 Saturn Vue models.
- Specialized suppliers: For parts and repairs specific to the discontinued Saturn brand, it may be necessary to look for specialty online retailers or forums.
