- Failed 3-5-R wave plate: On models equipped with the 6-speed automatic transmission (XR trim), the 3-5-R wave plate is a common failure point. This can cause a loss of the 3rd, 5th, and reverse gears, shuddering, or harsh shifts.
- Shift cable fracture (recall): Some 2007–2010 models with the 4-speed automatic transmission were recalled for a faulty shift cable that could fracture and prevent the shifter from matching the actual gear position. This could lead to a rollaway risk if the driver believed the car was in “Park”.
- Other shifting issues: Some owners have reported general issues with delayed or harsh shifting in both 4-speed and 6-speed automatic transmissions, sometimes tied to solenoids or contaminated fluid.
- Body Control Module (BCM) issues: Many 2007–2010 models were recalled for a faulty BCM connection that could cause various electrical problems, including non-functional brake lights or difficulty shifting out of “Park”.
- Blown cooling fan fuse: A recurring issue is a blown fuse for the cooling fans, which can lead to engine overheating and air conditioning failure.
- Engine oil leaks: Both the 4-cylinder and V6 engines are known to develop oil leaks over time, particularly from the front and rear main seals and the oil pan gasket.
- Evaporative (EVAP) system failure: A faulty EVAP vent valve located near the gas tank is a known issue that can trigger a “Check Engine” light.
- Faulty combination switch: The turn signal or combination switch can fail, preventing the turn signal from returning to its neutral position or causing other electrical malfunctions.
- Wheel bearing failure: Premature failure of wheel bearings is common and can cause a loud humming or howling noise from the wheels.
- Power steering loss (recall): Some 2008–2009 models experienced a sudden loss of electric power steering assist, which was the subject of a major GM recall.
- 2007 (XE, XR, Green Line): The
Saturn Aura
was introduced.
-
Aura XE
(standard): Used a 3.5L V6 engine and a 4-speed automatic transmission.
-
Aura XR
(performance): Featured a 3.6L V6 engine paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and manual TAPshift paddles.
-
Aura Green Line
(mild hybrid): Came with a 2.4L Ecotec engine and a 4-speed automatic transmission.
-
- 2008: A 2.4L 4-cylinder engine was made available on the XE trim, improving fuel economy.
- 2009: The 2.4L 4-cylinder engine on the XE trim was upgraded to a 6-speed automatic transmission, further boosting fuel efficiency.
- 2010: This was the final production year for the Saturn Aura before the brand was phased out.
