Common problems

Rust issues: The first-generation Mazda6 was susceptible to rust, particularly in the rear fenders and subframe. The severity of rust depends heavily on the car’s history, so this is a critical inspection point, especially for models from colder climates.
V6 engine issues: The 3.0L V6 is prone to several problems.

- Ignition coils: The ignition coils can fail, leading to misfires, especially in wet weather. The rear coils on the transversely mounted V6 are difficult and expensive to replace.

Automatic transmission problems

- Facelift: The car received updated styling, standard 16- or 17-inch alloy wheels, and revised transmissions, including a 5-speed automatic and a 6-speed manual.
- V6 change: The 3.0L V6 was slightly detuned from 220 hp to 215 hp to reduce emissions.
