- Rust: While Esprit chassis are galvanized, issues can still arise from accident damage.
- Interior quality: Despite the use of leather, interiors can be prone to squeaks and rattles. Switchgear was also often sourced from other manufacturers.
- Cooling system:
The cooling system, including radiators, intercoolers, and fans, can be problematic due to heat and age.
- Electrical issues: Issues can occur with window motors and headlight pods.
- V8-specific gearbox issues (1996–1998): The Renault-sourced 5-speed gearbox was the weakest point of the V8 model. When driven aggressively, it is known to shear fifth gear or break the input shaft. Some cars had a redesigned unit, but abuse could still cause problems.
- V8-specific engine issues: Early V8 models (pre-2000) have been known to have issues with water leaks between the cylinder liners and the block. This requires an expensive engine removal and teardown to fix. Coil packs can also fail due to heat.
- For maximum reliability (of the two): The S4 (1993–1996) is the safer bet. By this stage, the four-cylinder engine was thoroughly developed and is considered more reliable than the complex twin-turbo V8. Parts are also cheaper.
- For pure performance:
The V8 (1996–1998) is the clear winner, with significantly more power and torque. However, you must accept a higher risk of potentially catastrophic engine and gearbox issues. A thorough service history is essential.
- Driving experience: The S4 is lighter and more nimble, while the V8 offers a powerful and more modern feel. The V8’s sound is also a major draw for enthusiasts.
- Maintenance records: For any Esprit, a detailed service history is critical. Pay close attention to timing belt changes (every two to three years) and cooling system maintenance.
- Expert inspection: Always insist on a pre-purchase inspection by a mechanic who is very familiar with Lotuses and their quirks.
- Check for heat damage:
Look for signs of heat stress around the engine, particularly on the V8 model.
- Test drive: Pay close attention to gear changes and any engine noises.
