- Engine: The bike features a 349.7cc, four-valve, DOHC engine with electronic fuel injection via a 42mm Keihin throttle body.
- Performance: The engine’s powerband is very top-end focused, delivering its maximum power of around 46.9 hp at 12,200 RPM.
- Suspension: The 2011 model was the first KTM motocross bike to use a rear shock linkage, replacing the PDS no-link system on previous models. It came equipped with fully adjustable USD WP 48mm forks.
- Frame and chassis: The bike features a chromoly steel central double cradle frame and weighs approximately 230 lbs (without fuel).
- Throttle Position Sensor (TPS): A major issue on the 2011 model was the vulnerability of the TPS to water and grit contamination. This could cause the bike to run poorly, stall, or refuse to start. The TPS issue was addressed in the 2012 model with a rubber cover, which can be retrofitted to 2011 models.
- Lean fuel mixture: The bike was often delivered with a lean air-fuel mixture, contributing to inconsistent throttle response and stalling. Re-jetting or fuel mapping adjustments were often required to fix this
.
- Handlebar clamps: A major recall was issued for all 2011 KTM and Husaberg off-road motorcycles due to faulty handlebar clamps that could crack and fail, posing a crash hazard.
- Rims: Some testers noted that the stock Excel rims were soft and susceptible to flat spots, especially around the rim locks.
- Premature wear: Given the bike’s age, owners should inspect for premature wear on components like the cylinder, piston, and suspension.
- Inspect the TPS: When inspecting a used 2011 350 SX-F, check for a rubber cover protecting the TPS. If missing, it’s a good idea to install one.
- Check for recalls: Ensure the crucial handlebar clamp recall has been addressed.
- Listen for engine issues: Listen for unusual noises and test the bike for any stalling or inconsistent idle. A mechanic can also inspect the fuel system for leaks or contamination.
- Regular maintenance: High-performance race bikes like the 350 SX-F require consistent maintenance. An inspection should include checking valve clearances and replacing fluids and filters.
