The 2011 and 2012 Kia Optima Hybrid models introduced Kia’s very first hybrid powertrain to the midsize sedan market. Blending the aggressive, award-winning styling of the third-generation Optima with eco-friendly engineering, these two model years are virtually identical in design and performance.

Powertrain & Performance

Both model years share a full parallel hybrid system developed alongside the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. Unlike many competitors that use a seamless but loud Continuously Variable Transmission (CVVT/CVT), Kia paired its hybrid setup with a traditional 6-speed automatic transmission to provide a familiar, geared driving feel.

Electric Motor: 30 kW interior-permanent magnet motor
Battery Pack: 270-volt lithium-polymer battery
Combined Output: 206 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque
Electric-Only Speed: Capable of pure electric driving up to 62 mph under light throttle.

Fuel Economy

While highly efficient compared to the standard gas-only model, it fell slightly short of Prius or Camry Hybrid numbers of the same era.

EPA Estimates: 35 mpg City / 40 mpg Hwy (36 mpg combined).

Subtle Packaging Differences (2011 vs. 2012)

While the mechanical architecture, exterior look, and horsepower stayed exactly the same, Kia shuffled the standard equipment options to alter the base price point:

2011 Model: Came standard with more features built into the base price, including an 8-way power adjustable driver’s seat and the Microsoft-developed UVO infotainment system.
2012 Model: To lower the base entry price, Kia stripped the power driver’s seat and UVO system from the base trim, moving them into an optional, standalone Hybrid Convenience Package.

For both years, a hefty Hybrid Premium Technology Package was optional. It loaded the sedan with luxury features like a panoramic sunroof, navigation, a backup camera, an 8-speaker Infinity audio system, 17-inch alloy wheels, a heated steering wheel, and heated/cooled front seats.

Pros and Cons

👍 Pros: Drop-dead gorgeous exterior styling, conventional 6-speed automatic feels like a regular car, luxury-level features available in tech packages, and an excellent ride balance on the highway.
👎 Cons: Rough, jerky transitions when switching between electric and gas power, a delayed throttle response off the line, grabby/numb regenerative brakes, and reduced trunk space (dropped from 15.4 to 9.9 cubic feet to clear room for the battery pack).
