- John Deere 130: The entry-level model equipped with a 9 HP single-cylinder Kawasaki engine and a 30-inch single-blade or 38-inch twin-blade mower deck.
- John Deere 160: An upgrade featuring a 12.5 HP Kawasaki engine and a standard 38-inch mower deck.
- John Deere 180: The top-tier gear model, pushing 17 HP from a larger Kawasaki engine, often paired with a 38-inch or wide 46-inch heavy-duty mower deck.
- John Deere 165: Built with a 12.5 HP Kawasaki engine and a 38-inch mower deck.
- John Deere 175: Powered by a 14 HP Kawasaki engine and a 38-inch mower deck.
- John Deere 185: The premium flagship of the lineup, boasting a 17 HP Kawasaki engine and available with a 38-inch or 46-inch mower deck.
- Eaton vs. Sundstrand Hydrostatics: If you are working on or buying a 165, 175, or 185, pay attention to the serial number. Early models (pre-1988) used an Eaton hydrostatic pump requiring heavy SAE 30 oil. Later models switched to a highly durable Sundstrand hydrostatic pump powered by standard 10W-30 motor oil. You can visually identify them because the Eaton unit has a cooling fan on the side, while the Sundstrand fan sits directly on top of the pump.
