- Engine: Naturally aspirated John Deere 4-219 (300-Series), 4-cylinder diesel engine.
- Horsepower: 65 net hp (48.5 kW) at 2,500 RPM / 70 gross hp.
- Torque: 178 lb-ft (241.3 Nm) max torque at 1,300 RPM.
- Operating Weight: Typically ranges between 12,500 lbs and 14,500 lbs depending on the specific blade, loader bucket, or rear attachments (like a winch or backhoe).
- Fuel Capacity: 31 gallons.
- HLR Transmission: The machine features John Deere’s popular Hi-Lo-Reverse (HLR) power shift transmission, offering 4 basic speed ranges with on-the-fly shifting between high, low, and reverse within each range.
- Dry Steering Clutches: The 450B utilizes a mechanical clutch-and-brake system to turn. Pulling a steering lever disengages a dry clutch pack to cut power to that specific track, while feathering the foot brake swings the machine. (Note: Dry clutches require more ongoing maintenance than the wet clutches introduced on the subsequent 450C).
- 450B Crawler Dozer: Outfitted with heavy-duty outside-mount push frames. It commonly used an adjustable 6-way all-hydraulic blade (power angle and tilt).
- 450B Crawler Loader (CL): Equipped with a 1.25 cubic yard front loader bucket. Many were equipped with a multi-purpose “4-in-1” bucket for scraping, dumping, and gripping logs or stumps.
- Rear Attachments: Often outfitted with a rear PTO logging winch, a heavy-duty toolbar ripper, or a detachable backhoe unit.
- The “Dry Clutch” Caveat: Because the 450B uses dry steering clutches, storing the machine out of the elements is critical. If moisture gets inside the clutch housing during long periods of sitting, the steel plates can rust and fuse together, preventing the machine from steering.
- Serviceability: Because it has zero computer modules, a torque converter, or hydrostatic motors, it remains a favorite for DIY mechanics. Parts are widely available via aftermarket suppliers like Broken Tractor or equipment platforms like RitchieSpecs.
