-
2.5L I4: The standard engine on lower trims, producing 200 horsepower and 191 lb-ft of torque. This engine is typically paired with a six-speed automatic transmission but was also available with a manual transmission on some models.
-
3.6L V6: A more powerful option, with 308 horsepower and 275 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The V6 provides quick acceleration for a mid-size truck and features cylinder deactivation for improved fuel efficiency.
-
2.8L Duramax® Turbo-Diesel: This engine delivers 186 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque for maximum towing capacity and the best fuel economy. It comes paired with a six-speed automatic transmission.
- Max towing: Up to 7,700 pounds when properly equipped with the available Duramax diesel engine.
- Payload capacity: Ranged from 1,459 to 1,605 pounds, depending on the cab and drivetrain.
- SL and Base: Entry-level trims with cloth or vinyl seats, a 7-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a rearview camera.
-
SLE: Adds a larger 8-inch infotainment screen, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and satellite radio. The off-road-oriented All Terrain package, which adds an upgraded suspension, a locking rear differential, and other features, was available on the SLE.
-
SLT: Upgrades to standard leather upholstery, heated front seats, and wireless charging.
-
Denali: The luxury trim includes chrome exterior accents, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, standard navigation, and a Bose premium audio system. Reviewers noted that some interior elements in the Denali felt low-quality despite its premium price.
- Recalls: For the 2019 model year, the GMC Canyon has no major safety recalls listed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). However, some owner complaints and class-action lawsuits concerning earlier years suggest potential issues with the eight-speed automatic transmission, including shuddering or rough shifts.
- Safety ratings: The 2019 Canyon received mixed crash test results. The NHTSA gave it four out of five stars overall, while the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave it the second-lowest rating of “Marginal” in the passenger-side small overlap front test for the Crew Cab model.
- Reliability: Both U.S. News & World Report and J.D. Power gave the 2019 Canyon an “Average” predicted reliability rating. Some owners have reported issues with the transmission, engine, and electrical systems.
- Infotainment: A responsive and user-friendly GMC Infotainment system with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Some reviewers, however, noted issues with the layout of the 8-inch screen in the Denali trim.
- Cabin: While the front seats are spacious, the rear legroom in the Crew Cab can be tight for adults, and the Extended Cab’s rear jump seats are very small. Small-item storage is also limited compared to rivals.
- Convenience: New features for 2019 included an improved high-definition rearview camera, expanded availability of a heated steering wheel, and wireless charging. Remote start and rear parking sensors were also available on higher trims.
