- Engine: The 2005 Taurus came with a 3.0-liter “Vulcan” V6 engine.
- Horsepower: It produced 155 horsepower and 185 lb-ft of torque.
- Fuel economy: EPA estimates were around 18 mpg city and 25 mpg highway for the sedan.
- Engine: The 2005 Taurus SEL was available with a more powerful 3.0-liter, 24-valve “Duratec” V6.
- Horsepower: This engine produced 200 horsepower and 200 lb-ft of torque.
- Transmission and drivetrain: Both engines were paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission and standard front-wheel drive (FWD).
- SE: The base trim included standard features like air conditioning, power accessories, and cruise control.
- SEL: This higher-level trim added more upscale features, such as wood grain interior trim, bucket seats, and optional leather upholstery.
- Optional 6-passenger seating: A 6-passenger configuration with a front bench seat was available on both the SE and SEL.
- Station Wagon: The limited-production station wagon offered more cargo space (38.8 cubic feet behind the second row) and an optional rear-facing third-row seat.
- Transmission failure: The automatic transmission used in the 2005 Taurus is a significant weak point. It is known to fail at moderate mileage, with symptoms including harsh shifting, slipping, and complete failure.
- Camshaft position sensor magnet: A known issue with the engine is a magnet on the camshaft position sensor that can fall out of its mount, potentially damaging the synchronizers and causing a long crank time.
- Engine oil pan gasket leak: The engine oil pan gasket is known to leak over time. Oil dripping onto the exhaust can cause a burning smell.
- Engine misfire/bucking: Some owners have reported engine misfires or bucking, particularly at freeway speeds, without any diagnostic codes.
- Sudden acceleration investigation: In 2012, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened an investigation into 2005–2006 Taurus models for allegations of unintended acceleration. It was found that a disconnected cruise control cable could cause the throttle to stick.
