- Minor updates: The 2010 models received some trim-level feature shuffles. The off-road-oriented FX4 trim was replaced by a new Cabela’s trim level, though the FX4 Off-Road package remained an option.
- Available factory bedliner: A new factory-installed spray-in bedliner, called ToughBed, became an option for the first time.
- Technology additions: Ford’s SYNC voice-activated infotainment system was made available on more trims than in 2009. The suite of Ford Work Solutions features for fleet and jobsite use was also carried over, offering an in-dash computer and tool tracking.
- PowerScope mirrors: Power-telescoping and power-folding trailer tow mirrors continued to be an exclusive and popular feature on Super Duty trucks.
-
6.4L Power Stroke Diesel
: This engine, known for its significant reliability issues, was the heart of the diesel lineup. It produced 350 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque.
- Gasoline engines: Two gasoline options were available: the standard 5.4L Triton V8 (300 hp, 365 lb-ft of torque) and the optional 6.8L Triton V10 (362 hp, 457 lb-ft of torque).
- Transmissions: Gas-powered trucks on upper trim levels received a 5-speed TorqShift automatic transmission. A 6-speed manual was standard on some configurations.
- Towing: An F-450 equipped with the diesel engine and a fifth-wheel hitch could tow up to 24,600 pounds. An F-250 with the diesel could pull up to 12,500 pounds.
- 6.4L Power Stroke engine problems:
- Oil dilution: Diesel fuel can leak past the piston rings during the regeneration of the diesel particulate filter (DPF), leading to fuel diluting the engine oil.
- DPF clogging: The DPF filter can clog, reducing performance, and the regeneration process can cause other engine problems due to elevated temperatures.
- Failed emissions components: The exhaust after-treatment system, including two EGR coolers, is a common source of trouble and expensive repairs.
- Major repairs: Many major repairs on the 6.4L engine, including high-pressure fuel pump replacement, require removing the truck’s cab, which drastically increases labor costs.
- Other problems:
- “Death wobble”: Some owners of 4×4 models have experienced the “death wobble” steering vibration.
- 5.4L V8 spark plugs: For trucks with the 5.4L gas engine, the two-piece spark plugs have a reputation for breaking during removal.
- Overall reliability: Due to the severe nature of the 6.4L diesel issues, the 2010 Super Duty has a low reliability rating and high ownership costs. It is widely considered an unreliable model year, and buyers are often warned away from the 6.4L Power Stroke diesel engine.
